Jan Groover, a member of PUMC, was a nurse for many years. She understood the care, the love, and support for those facing serious, medical issues. Therefore, the kind of ministry she wanted to offer was that of a solace or comfort for her patients. (Solace means comfort or consolation in a time of distress or sadness – so she wanted to console, support, calm, and provide a bit of comfort to sick persons.) How better to accomplish this than by offering a soft, teddy bear to hug, hold, and feel that presence of support!
She began this many years ago and first gave bears to those diagnosed with cancer. She also gave the bears to cancer survivors. She included offering bears to those who were just struggling with health issues. She chose very particular and specific bears to complete this ministry. (She would find a bear with spectacles for one who wore glasses, a bear holding a book for a teacher, etc.) Her creativity and generosity was very personal and appropriate for numerous bear recipients.
